Don’t forget the FAFSA
FAFSA- Free Financial Aid for College
It recently occured to me that many people searching for scholarships don’t realize what the FAFSA application is. First of all FAFSA the acronym stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is a government provided source of free Financial Aid. College can be costly and when it comes to money and calculations there is no one more straight to the point than the Federal Government. Through the FAFSA they collect all of your personal information ie: social security number, number of dependents (if any), financial status (employed or not), household income, do you own a car and other general information. This information goes into a profile created by you and for you. Then your status is calculated and the scholarships and grants that your are eligible to receive are made known to you either by the government or your college or universities financial aid office.
How long it takes to receive information from FAFSA
Generally it takes a few days to a few weeks to get a response after completing your Fafsa application. You are issued a pin which allows you to log in and check your status. Every year you need to fill out a fafsa because your status may change. For example you may not be eligible for any financial aid this semester but the following year when you resubmit your fafsa you can be eligible to receive financial awards. The first thing that the Financial Aid office tells students to do when looking for financial aid is “You need to fill out a Fafsa application.” Then once your status is determined they will either present you with the offers your are eligible for and if your not eligible they will help you create a financial plan to find other avenues for scholarships and grants.
